Privacy policy
Last updated: 1 November 2026
Forgetful is a Chrome extension that shows your notes and to-dos on the new tab page. This policy explains what happens to the information you put into it.
What Forgetful stores
- Your notes and to-dos: the text you write on the new tab page or add from the toolbar button or right-click menu.
- Your settings, such as theme, font and text size.
- Version history: earlier copies of your notes, kept so you can restore them.
- Your plan: the date your free trial started and, if you buy a plan, its license key. The key holds the plan, its end date and the email address you bought it with, so Forgetful can unlock itself without contacting us.
All of this is stored in your browser using Chrome’s built-in extension storage.
Sync
If Chrome sync is turned on in your Chrome profile and “Sync with my Chrome profile” is on in Forgetful’s settings (it is by default), your notes and settings are synced to your other computers through Chrome sync. Your trial start date and license key are always synced this way, so every computer signed in to your Chrome profile knows your plan. Google operates Chrome sync under its own privacy policy. You can turn Forgetful’s sync off at any time in its settings; your notes then stay on that computer only.
iPhone app (optional)
If you connect the Forgetful iPhone app, Chrome and your phone exchange your tasks through Forgetful’s sync server.
- Chrome uploads a copy of your notes page as plain text, and your phone sends the tasks you add or tick off.
- All of it is encrypted on your devices before it’s sent, with a key that only your devices have. We can’t read it, and neither could anyone who got hold of the server.
- To deliver it, the server also keeps random ids for your devices, a fingerprint (hash) of each device’s access code, each device’s name (such as “iPhone”) and when it last checked in.
- Disconnecting a phone ends its access. Settings → iPhone → Disconnect all phones deletes everything stored on the server.
- When you add a task with Siri, Apple handles your voice request under its own privacy policy. Forgetful receives only the text of the task.
What Forgetful does not do
- It does not send your notes or any other data to us or to any third party, apart from the encrypted copy described under iPhone app, which we can’t read.
- It does not use analytics, tracking, advertising or cookies.
- It does not read the pages you visit. When you choose “Add to Forgetful” or “+ This page”, it reads only the selected text, link, page title and address you asked it to save.
- It does not sell, rent or share your data.
Your control over your data
- Export your notes as Markdown or download a full backup from Settings at any time.
- Delete your notes from Settings → Your data → Delete everything.
- Uninstalling Forgetful removes its stored data from that browser. To clear synced copies too, use Delete everything before you uninstall, or clear Chrome’s synced data from your Google Account.
